Second spread in Beate's journal

Today I finally finished the second spread in Beate's Round Robin art journal. I had some difficulty with this one. Her theme for the journal was Fools and or Divinities and in keeping with the theme, I wanted this one to be about fools. The first one, I thought, was about Divinities. I also wanted it to be completely different.

I ended up making this one about Divinities and the first one about fools. Somehow intertwined, as they are in life. Both being two sides of the same thing, forever connected and dependant upon each other.

I did find my quote for the first spread and together with that one I found the quote to go with the second spread. They are both from Ursula K. Le Guin.

"My imagination makes me human and makes me a fool. It gives me all the world and exiles me from it."

I felt it was fitting with the sadness in her eyes and it expresses how I often feel deep inside.

But I only found this quote after I started making the second spread, which I set out to make about fools. I chose bright colors to go with it.

Added some pearlescent white and some pink circles.

Added my journalling, talking about how we are all fools and how that is a good thing and generally just pouring my thoughts out on paper.

Collaged some graphic 45 paper to it, as you saw last wednesday. And then I got stuck, completely and utterly stuck...

So went looking for the quotes I wanted to add to the spreads and bumped into two I felt were right. Then I realized I had it all wrong. The first spread wasn't about divinities at all, the second one was.

So I added a graceful being, embracing the world.

Added the first quote to the first spread and the second to the second spread.

"I talk about the gods, I am an atheist. But I am an artist too and therefore a liar.
Distrust everything I say, I am telling the truth."

It speaks about truth. The truth that lies beyond what you can see.

Truth as a changeable thing, as something to think about.

To question and explore.

I kept the white in the middle of the pages on purpose, as I like how it poses as a crack, a divide between the pages. Showing how, what you know to be true today, can be wrong tomorrow.

I had a great time working on Beate's book, working with a theme I might never have chosen myself. It got me to think and I like that.

So now all that is left is to finish my sign-in tag and sent the book on it's way. To continue its journey around the world, in the Round Robin hosted by Tracy, back to Beate.
